The ongoing examinations of the students of Imo State University might be disrupted if care is not taken, following the indefinite strike embarked upon Monday, by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Imo State University branch.
According to the IMSU ASUU branch Chairman and Secretary, Stephen Oguji and Lazarus Chikwendu respectively, the decision to embark on strike followed the alleged failure of the Imo state government and the University management to implement the 2025 agreement reached between ASUU and the Federal Government on the improved welfare and conditions of service for Academic staff..
They said the agreement was signed on December 23, 2025 and was expected to take effect from January 2026, adding that the branch had repeatedly presented the matter to the university management, held engagements with the office and issued a 21-day ultimatum but no response was heard.
Other grievances by the IMSU ASUU branch are as follows: that other state universities like Bauchi, Ekiti, Sokoto, Ogun, Osun, and Sokoto states had implemented the agreement while IMSU had not; that the Treasury Single Account(TSA) was still retained despite their disapproval; Promotion arrears dating back to 2016 withheld land members gone several months without their salaries; 21 months of check off dues witheld and unpaid Earned Academic Allowances(EAA) since 2009.
The IMSU ASUU leadership therefore, vowed not to return to classes until the 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement was fully implemented in the university.
