Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has officially launched the 2026 Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention Campaign in Wamakko Local Government Area, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to fostering a healthy environment for sustainable development.
Governor Aliyu underscored that malaria remains a pressing public health challenge, particularly during the rainy season when mosquito breeding intensifies. He noted that the seasonal intervention—which involves administering monthly anti-malarial doses to children aged three to 59 months—has proven effective in reducing malaria cases by up to 75 percent.
“Fewer hospital visits mean healthier communities,” the governor stated, while commending the State Commissioner for Health, the State Malaria Elimination Agency, the National Malaria Elimination Programme, the Malaria Consortium, and other partners for sustaining this life-saving annual initiative.
He also extended gratitude to traditional and religious leaders, local government chairmen, and mass drug distributors for their dedication to reaching vulnerable children across the state.
Governor Aliyu further praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to reducing the burden of malaria and other diseases, describing the President as genuinely invested in the wellbeing of all Nigerians.
In his welcome address, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Faruk Wurno, highlighted that healthcare delivery remains a top priority under the administration’s 9-Point Smart Agenda. He attributed recent positive health indices to the governor’s unwavering support.
“Our infrastructure has improved, our manpower is excellent, and our services across tertiary and secondary levels are now of high quality,” Dr. Wurno said.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, the District Head of Wamakko, Alhaji Ahmed Barade, commended Governor Aliyu for his steadfast dedication to advancing healthcare services in the state.
