The chairman of the taskforce committee on drug abuse, Muhyi Magaji Rimingado, has linked the violent crimes in Kano state to prevalence of drug abuse in the society.
He stated this at a strategic meeting with newsmen in Kano on Tuesday while delivering an address on the functions of the committee.
He explained that violent crimes like thuggery are all linked to drug abuse while calling on parents and politicians to ensure they guide their children and supporters respectively.
“His excellency the governor of Kano Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, in trying to tackle this menace established this committee.
“Before establishing the committee, an emergency declaration was made, a statewide emergency on substance abuse.
“He charged this committee with full mandate to go after drug trafficking and abuse, and the committee will determine the mechanism to rehabilitate the victims” he stated.
The chairman of the Taskforce further explained that in 2024 – 2025, over 3,080 major crimes were committed in the state and 70 percent of which were all attributed to drug abuse.
“2,700 crimes were committed because of drug abuse, that is why the state government is so concerned about it” he stated.
The chairman called on parents and newsmen to support the all out war against drug abuse in the state as a means of bringing down the rate of crimes in the state.
