The Nigerian Army has arrested two suspects after foiling a planned attack on a Fulani settlement in Plateau State, preventing a fresh outbreak of communal violence.
According to a military source, the operation was carried out by troops of Operation Enduring Peace following intelligence that armed men were mobilising to launch a revenge attack.
Acting on the intelligence, the troops intercepted the suspects before they reached the settlement, preventing casualties and containing rising tensions in the affected communities.
“The troops responded promptly and decisively, preventing the planned attack from being carried out. Their intervention ensured that innocent lives were protected and stopped another cycle of retaliatory violence,” the source said on Wednesday.
The source further noted that preliminary investigations linked the planned attack to the recent killing of a farmer.
According to him, the farmer was attacked after resisting attempts by suspected herders to graze livestock on his farmland, raising fears of reprisals.
He added that the suspects have been handed over to Jengre Division of the Plateau Police Command for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Meanwhile, the military reaffirmed its commitment to protecting all residents without discrimination, warning that anyone who resorts to violence would face the full weight of the law.
It also urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies and promptly report suspicious activities, stressing that dialogue, restraint and respect for the rule of law remain essential to sustaining peace in affected communities.
