Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has responded to the criticism surrounding his reported purchase of a custom 1-of-1 Venuum Widebody Bugatti Chiron said to be worth about N9 billion.
The singer has faced widespread reactions on social media, with some critics questioning the value of such an expensive acquisition and suggesting the money could have been directed toward investments or charitable causes.
Others also argued that Nigeria’s road infrastructure is not suitable for high-end luxury vehicles.
Singer responds during Portugal performance
Burna Boy addressed the controversy while performing at the Afronation concert in Portugal on Friday.
In a freestyle, the Afrobeats star dismissed the criticism by referencing the country’s road construction challenges.
“I buy Bugatti, dem ask which road I go drive am? No be today we dey do road like Julius Berger,” he rapped.
The performance quickly gained attention online as fans reacted to his comments.
Purchase sparks debate online
The reported Bugatti purchase has continued to generate conversations across social media, with supporters defending Burna Boy’s right to spend his earnings as he chooses, while critics questioned the timing and practicality of the acquisition.
The luxury vehicle is believed to be one of the rarest customised Bugatti models.
Previous controversy resurfaces
The latest debate also revived discussions about Burna Boy’s previous public dispute with socialite Sophia Egbueje.
Last year, Egbueje alleged that the singer failed to fulfil a promise to buy her a Lamborghini.
Burna Boy neither confirmed nor denied the allegation but appeared to mock the controversy in his song No Do.
Egbueje later announced that she had purchased the luxury vehicle herself.
