The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has disowned a fake notice circulating in its name, warning members of the public against a fraudulent scheme offering forfeited vehicles for sale at heavily discounted prices.
The agency said the fraudsters have been impersonating its Secretary, Shadrach Haruna, by sending fake letters and messages claiming to offer forfeited vehicles to unsuspecting members of the public.
In a disclaimer issued on Friday, the NDLEA described the purported offers as a scam aimed at defrauding Nigerians of their hard-earned money.
The agency stressed that none of its officials has the authority to privately allocate, offer or sell forfeited vehicles or any other seized assets to individuals.
It explained that all vehicles and assets forfeited as proceeds of drug-related crimes are disposed of only through public auctions conducted by government-appointed and registered auctioneers.
According to the agency, every legitimate auction is widely advertised in national newspapers and on its official communication platforms in line with extant laws and public procurement guidelines.
The NDLEA urged members of the public to disregard and report any letters, text messages or social media posts claiming to offer forfeited vehicles on behalf of Haruna or any other agency official.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and accountability, the agency advised Nigerians not to fall victim to the fraudsters and urged anyone approached with such offers to report the matter to the nearest NDLEA command or through its official communication channels.
