The FCT Police Command has revealed how its operatives rescued a 36-year-old woman, Grace Aniekuoku, who was allegedly chained and locked in a room by her brother for more than one year and four months.
According to the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Mohammed Sanusi, the rescue operation was launched after the command received a distress report on June 12, 2026, alleging that the Anambra State indigene was being unlawfully detained under inhumane conditions by her brother, Chinedu Aniekuoku.
Sanusi said detectives from the Katampe Division were immediately deployed to the residence to verify the report and rescue the victim.
He disclosed that upon arrival, the suspect became hostile and resisted the officers, denying them access to the room where his sister was being held.
The police, however, forced their way into the building and discovered the victim in chains, severely emaciated and lying in her own waste under deplorable sanitary conditions.
“The suspect was promptly arrested, while the victim was rescued and rushed to a hospital, where she is currently receiving medical treatment,” Sanusi said on Monday.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect had allegedly taken away the victim’s son to an unknown location about two years ago.
Police believe the prolonged confinement may have been intended to stop the woman from demanding answers about the whereabouts of her child.
Sanusi said efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the missing boy, while the victim continues to receive medical care and rehabilitation.
He added that the suspect remains in police custody and will be charged in court after investigations are concluded.
The FCT Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and urged residents to promptly report cases of abuse, unlawful detention and other criminal activities to security agencies.
