FIFA has declared Côte d’Ivoire the youngest squad at the 2026 World Cup, with an average age of 25.8 years, signalling a bold new era for the Elephants.
The global governing body made the announcement via its official FIFA World Cup social media channels, stating: “Introducing Côte d’Ivoire… Youngest squad at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Average age: 25.8.”
This milestone highlights the West African nation’s strategic shift towards a new generation of talent following the golden era dominated by icons such as Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré.
Under coach Emerse Faé, the team has prioritised emerging stars playing in Europe’s elite leagues, marking a clear departure from reliance on veteran players.
Several experienced campaigners were left out of the squad, including former Premier League striker Wilfried Zaha, currently on loan at Charlotte FC from Galatasaray.
Leading the youthful charge is RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande, born on November 14, 2006, who stands as the youngest player in the Ivorian squad.
The squad also boasts a wave of exciting prospects all yet to turn 25: Bazoumana Touré, Christ Inao Oulai, Evann Guessand, Guela Doué, Amad Diallo, Mohamed Koné, Oumar Diakité, Elye Wahi, Simon Adingra, Ange-Yoan Bonny, and Ousmane Diomande.
Côte d’Ivoire will compete in the expanded 48-team tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, where their fresh approach is expected to turn heads.
FIFA’s data shows this trend extends across several other nations.
Ecuador follows closely with an average age of 26 years and 28 days.
Morocco ranks next at 26 years and 144 days, ahead of Bosnia and Herzegovina (26 years, 154 days) and Tunisia (26 years, 235 days).
Spain sits at 26 years and 273 days, with Norway recording 26 years and 293 days, while South Africa completes the list of notably young sides at 26 years and 295 days.
As the Elephants prepare for their opening matches, anticipation is building around whether this new generation can uphold Côte d’Ivoire’s proud football heritage and deliver a memorable tournament performance.
