ELECTRICITY consumers in parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have commended the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on its directive to pay compensation to Band A customers.
The consumers who reside in Lokogima, Area 1, Lugbe and Apo resettlement Area. spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday.
They said that the directive was a welcome development as it would boost public confidence in the power sector.
NAN reports that the NERC had issued a directive to pay special compensation for Band A customers arising from grid generation constraints between February .and March.
According to the commission, the directive No. NERC/2026/002 is introduced in recognition of the significant generation shortfalls experienced across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
The commission said that the shortfalls affected the ability of Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to meet the committed service levels for some Band A customers.
NAN also reports that under the current structure, Band A customers who get electricity for 20 to 24 hours daily pay N206- N209 per Kilo Watts per hour (KWh).
Mrs Cynthia Okosun, residing in Lokogoma said that she was happy with the development, adding that with this compensation consumers’ confidence had been restored in the sector.
Okosun said that consumers on Band A are made to pay huge amount of money for electricity so the compensation was necessary.
”They promised us between 20and 24 hours of power supply but sometimes we don’t get up to 10 hours.
”We are happy with this development as it will restore confidence in the sector, especially for Band A customers” she said.
Mr Jimoh Ibrahim, also residing in Logokoma said that the directive was a welcome development for the Band A customers and all electricity consumers.
Ibrahim said that such development was good for customers and commended NERC for the directive.
”This is a very good development for us on Band A and I commend NERC for taking this step so that we get value for our money,”he said.
Mr Thomas Okosun , who resides in Lugbe also commended NERC for directive.
He said that NERC directing that compensation should be paid to Band A customers would make life easier for customers on Band A.
He appealed to the regulator to ensure that there was steady power supply in the country.
Mrs Mary Okosodo, also residing in Lugbe lauded the directive to pay compensation to the customers but added, that government should do everything possible to improve electricity supply so citizens could get value for their money.
According to her, there is the need for improved infrastructure to ensure steady power supply.
”I am happy with the directive to pay compensation to the affected customers, however, government should put infrastructure in place to avoid frequent grid generation constraints,” she said.
Mr Augustine Eromosele, resident in Apo resettlement said that the compensation was good but added that government should put the right infrastructure in place to avoid the frequent grid collapses.
He said; ”paying compensation to those on Band A is good but what is important is ensuring the right infrastructure is in place to avoid future occurrence .(NAN)
