Ogun Police arrest suspected ₦2.5m fraudster, recover 25 ATM cards, phones

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 45-year-old man, Ameachine Anthony, over an alleged ₦2.5 million fraud and recovered 25 ATM cards and several mobile phones during an operation in the state.

The suspect was arrested on September 22, 2026, by operatives of the Igbesa Division following an investigation into the alleged fraud.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement, saying preliminary investigations revealed a suspected scheme involving the use of utility bills and newly acquired SIM cards to facilitate the opening of bank accounts.

According to the police, the suspect allegedly worked with associates who used the documents and SIM cards to open bank accounts before collecting the associated ATM cards for fraudulent transactions.

The police said 25 ATM cards and several mobile phones were recovered from the suspect during the operation.

Anthony and the recovered items have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.

The command did not disclose the identities of the alleged victims or provide further details about how the ₦2.5 million was obtained.

The arrest formed part of an 11-day security operation conducted by the Ogun State Police Command between September 16 and 26, 2026, which resulted in the arrest of 11 suspects and the recovery of firearms, suspected stolen vehicles and other exhibits.

The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, commended officers involved in the operations for their efforts and urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information to security agencies.

The police also advised members of the public to exercise caution when conducting online financial transactions and protect their personal and banking information to avoid falling victim to fraud.

The suspect remains under investigation, and the allegations against him have not been established in court.
