THE CLEEN Foundation has commenced a multi-stakeholder dialogue on election security management in Plateau ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Mr Peter Maduoma, Executive Director, CLEEN Foundation, said on Wednesday in Jos that the engagement was aimed at strengthening collaboration between members of the public and election management stakeholders towards ensuring a peaceful 2027 General Election.
Maduoma, who was represented by Dr Gabriel Akinremi, said the dialogue was part of CLEEN Foundation’s efforts to contribute to sustainable peace in Plateau as the country approaches the election.
“Citizens’ engagement on election security community threat Mapping and multi-stakeholder dialogue are very vital to a peaceful, free and fair election ,”
According to him, the forum will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss and chart a pathway towards improved election security before, during and after the 2027 general election.
He said that at end of the meeting, there would be the signing of a peace agreement by stakeholders in Plateau.
In his remarks, the Commissioner of Police in Plateau, Mr Faniyan Ayodeji, commended CLEEN Foundation for organising the dialogue, describing it as an important platform for strengthening collaboration among stakeholders towards peaceful and credible elections.
Ayodeji, who was represented by Mr Nengi Jepthah, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, said that for the country to have a credible election, it was salient for all stakeholders to do the right thing.
He stressed the need for stakeholders to play their respective roles responsibly and work together to ensure that the electoral process was peaceful and credible.
The commissioner called for greater collaboration among security agencies, election stakeholders, community representatives and members of the public to prevent activities capable of undermining the electoral process.
Prof. Samuel Egwu, Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Plateau, said the commission was making plans to establish voting centres for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in nine Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Egwu listed the LGAs as Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Jos South, Mangu, Kanam, Kanke, Wase and Bokkos.
According to him, IDPs have the fundamental right to cast their votes despite being displaced.
He said the initiative was part of efforts to ensure that eligible voters were not disenfranchised because of displacement.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting brought together security agencies, election stakeholders and community representatives to discuss ways of promoting peaceful elections.(NAN)
