“He told me there was a gang-up against him” – Woman cries out over husband’s disappearance from offshore work

A Nigerian woman has cried out over the disappearance of her husband, an offshore chef who has remained missing since August 2024 after allegedly sending her a distress call.

According to her, her husband worked as an intercontinental chef in the catering section of a vessel operated by Sigma Oilfield and had been there since 2011.

In her words, she said:

“On the 29th of July 2024, he went to work because it’s a 45-minute helicopter flight from the airport to where the vessel is in the sea. A week after his arrival at work, he gave me a distress call via WhatsApp that there was a gang-up against him.”

She revealed that she advised him to remain calm and avoid confrontation. However, on August 6, 2024, she was informed that he was missing, with his phone and wallet reportedly found on his bed.

The woman claimed that three days after his disappearance, a baker at the vessel asked her for her husband’s phone password. She also alleged that her husband had told her he was being threatened by Campos, whom she identified as the head of the catering section.

“Till that day of his disappearance till now, I and my husband’s family, my people, we’ve made a lot of moves. We’ve done petition to the IG, the owner of the vessel, the contractor at the time my husband was working there,” she added.

She disclosed that the family also petitioned the NUPRC, which investigated but made no arrests. According to her, the agency later informed her that the company described the disappearance as mysterious.

She continues to seek answers and is appealing for information that could help establish what happened to her husband and locate him.
