A Nigerian man who voted for President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election has expressed regret over his decision, blaming the current economic hardship for his declining financial situation.
The man, whose identity was not disclosed, said he had been unable to eat since morning when he spoke about his struggles, adding that he had gone from owning two cars and living in a comfortable apartment to struggling to pay his house rent.
He made the remarks while reacting to Nigeria’s economic situation in a video that has sparked reactions on social media.
According to the man, he supported Tinubu during the last presidential election because he believed the president would improve the country’s economic situation.
However, he claimed that his financial circumstances had deteriorated since then, leaving him struggling to meet basic needs and worried about losing his accommodation.
“I voted for President Tinubu in 2023, thinking he would do well, but he disappointed us,” he said.
The man added that rising rent had made his situation more difficult, warning that he might soon be forced out of his apartment if he failed to meet his financial obligations.
He also called on the president to step aside, suggesting that Tinubu had done enough and should allow someone else to take over the country’s leadership.
His comments have reignited discussions about the cost of living, rising housing expenses and the impact of economic policies on ordinary Nigerians.
Nigerians react to man’s lamentation
The video generated mixed reactions, with some social media users expressing sympathy for the man while others questioned whether voters who supported Tinubu would change their political choices in the next election.
A user identified as Godseth expressed anger over the situation, writing, “I pray make the economy kpai everybody wey been vote for Tinubu before.”
SeniorMan, however, suggested that financial hardship might not necessarily change the voting decisions of some supporters of the ruling party.
“No send this one o.. with 2k he go still Vote APC.. Una go too suffer,” he wrote.
Another commenter, Heyzeekel, blamed tribalism for some Nigerians’ political decisions and questioned whether voters would make different choices in the 2027 general election.
“See wetin tribalism go cause. Yet someone no go still get sense in 2027 Elections,” he said.
Dammy expressed sympathy for the man but urged him to reconsider his political choices in the next election.
“I feel so sorry for him, he should try and correct his mistakes come next year. But one thing about people like this is that, they might ended up not voting for any candidate because their preferred candidate as f’ed up, because of tribalism he won’t vote for Obi or Atiku smh,” the commenter wrote.
Adekunle also argued that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could lose support because of public dissatisfaction with the economic situation.
“APC have lost millions of votes. And I’m happy they are not seeing it. Hoping tribalism will cut it again,” he wrote.
Meanwhile, Sheriff called on Nigerians to consider the consequences of their electoral decisions and urged voters to participate in the 2027 election.
“There’s always consequences after election whether good/bad. By every means necessary tinubu n his gangs must leave aso-rock in January 2027. Stop being useful idiots to unfortunate, useless, unpatriotic, evil people that doesn’t want u to live a better life. Vote 4 Peter Obi,” the commenter wrote.
