Why Seun Kuti Left Peller’s Wedding, Singer Finally Explains

Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has dismissed viral reports claiming he angrily left the wedding ceremony of popular content creator Peller over jokes about his late father, Fela Kuti.

The rumours spread after a video circulated on social media showing Seun leaving the event while saying, “We are in the wrong place.”

The clip sparked speculation that he was offended by one of the event’s MCs, who reportedly made jokes referencing the controversial debate about whether Wizkid is “bigger than Fela.”

Singer explains why he left the ceremony

Addressing the reports while speaking at the New Afrika Shrine in Lagos, Seun insisted he was not upset and only left because he had another event to attend.

According to him, he remained at the wedding until around 8:30 p.m. before heading to the Shrine.

“I left Peller’s wedding about 8:30 pm. I came to the Shrine. There’s an event at the Shrine and I have to be there. But bloggers were saying I left angrily. Was I supposed to be dancing when I was hurriedly leaving the place for another event?” Seun said.

Rumours followed viral wedding video

The speculation intensified after social media users interpreted Seun’s departure as a reaction to jokes made during the wedding reception.

One of the event’s MCs also reportedly accused the Afrobeat singer of having anger issues, further fueling the online discussion.

However, Seun’s explanation has challenged those claims, maintaining that his departure was purely due to prior commitments.

Fela-Wizkid debate resurfaces

The incident also revived discussions surrounding the long-running debate over Wizkid’s controversial statement that he was “bigger than Fela.”

The comment was made during an online exchange between Wizkid and Seun Kuti in January 2026 and generated widespread reactions from fans, celebrities and public figures.

Although the topic resurfaced during Peller’s wedding celebrations, Seun has now clarified that it was not the reason he left the event.
