Police arrests eight Niger men with cannabis, weapons

The Niger State Police Command has arrested eight suspected miscreants during a raid on identified criminal blackspots in Maitumbi, recovering dangerous weapons and cannabis from some of the suspects.

The operation was carried out as part of efforts to curb criminal activities and improve security in the Maitumbi area.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said operatives attached to the Maitumbi Division, in collaboration with vigilante members, conducted the raid at about 1:30am on Sunday, August 23, 2026.

The suspects were identified as Anas Sani, who was found with a sickle and sticks; Ibrahim Musa, with a cutlass and sticks; Isah Haruna, with a long knife; Buhari Usman, with a knife and cannabis; Yusuf Shehu, with a knife; Halilu Abubakar, with cannabis; Saidu Idris; and Musa Idris, also known as Fresh.

According to the police, the operation targeted identified criminal blackspots within the Maitumbi area and resulted in the recovery of the weapons and illicit substance.

Abiodun said the suspects were in police custody and undergoing further investigation.

He added that they would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.

The police spokesman reiterated the command’s commitment to sustaining operations against criminal elements and ensuring the safety of residents across the state.
