Nigerian Driver Gets 13 Months for Dangerous UK Police Pursuit

A 23-year-old Nigerian man, Michael Chiedu Nwanze, has received a 13-month prison sentence after entering a guilty plea to reckless driving and related offences stemming from a high-speed police chase in Northampton, United Kingdom.

Nwanze was initially stopped by officers in Abington Square, Northampton, on March 10, 2026, after his vehicle was identified as lacking insurance coverage.

Rather than complying with the stop, he reportedly accelerated away, initiating a pursuit through several streets before continuing onto a major roadway.

During the chase, he allegedly ran multiple red traffic signals and reached speeds of 70mph in zones with 40mph limits, later exceeding 100mph while travelling on the dual carriageway.

As he approached a roundabout, Nwanze encountered stationary traffic and, in attempting to evade pursuing officers, collided with several vehicles.

His vehicle was ultimately trapped by surrounding traffic, enabling officers to place him under arrest.

He faced charges including driving contrary to licence conditions, dangerous driving, driving without insurance, and failing to stop for police.

Nwanze entered guilty pleas to these charges at Northampton Crown Court in April and received his sentence during a subsequent court appearance in June.

The lead investigating officer from Northamptonshire Police’s Roads Policing Team characterised the defendant’s actions as demonstrating complete disregard for the safety of fellow road users and pedestrians.

According to the officer, the defendant travelled at excessive speeds throughout the pursuit, disregarded traffic control signals, and placed numerous individuals at risk while attempting to evade police intervention.

The officer added that Northamptonshire Police would continue actively targeting individuals engaging in illegal and reckless road behaviour, expressing hope that the sentence would communicate a clear message that such conduct would not be tolerated.
