Three senior officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), including the Officer-in-Charge of the Ibara Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, have been removed following a security breach that allowed a death row inmate to stream live on TikTok using a smuggled mobile phone.
The inmate was found to have illegally possessed the device while in custody, prompting the Service to launch a preliminary investigation into how the breach occurred and those responsible.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the NCoS Public Relations Officer, Jane Osuji.
According to the statement, the mobile phone has been recovered, while the inmate has been transferred to another custodial facility with enhanced security measures.
The Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, ordered the immediate removal of the Officer-in-Charge and two other principal officers pending the conclusion of investigations.
The Service said the disciplinary action was necessary to uphold accountability and strengthen security procedures across its facilities.
It added that investigations were ongoing to establish whether any personnel facilitated the inmate’s access to the prohibited device.
The NCoS warned that anyone found to have aided the breach would face appropriate disciplinary and administrative sanctions in line with existing regulations.
The Service assured Nigerians of its commitment to maintaining strict security standards in custodial facilities and preventing similar incidents in the future.
