Two unidentified men have been killed after they were allegedly attacked by a mob following accusations that they were involved in a robbery in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, along Ekpo Obasi, near Yellow Duke, Calabar South.
The Cross River State Police Command, in a statement made available to journalist yesterday by it’s Public Relations Officer Eitokpah Sunday, said its operatives visited the scene after receiving information about the incident and commenced preliminary investigations.
According to the command, the two men were allegedly apprehended and attacked by a mob after they were suspected of being involved in a robbery.
The police said the circumstances surrounding the deaths were still being investigated, adding that efforts were also underway to identify the deceased.
“The remains have been evacuated from the scene with the assistance of the relevant local government authorities for appropriate preservation,” the statement said.
The command condemned the resort to jungle justice, urging residents to hand over suspected criminals to the police or other lawful authorities for investigation and prosecution.
The police stressed that no individual had the right to take the law into their own hands.
The command added that further details would be made available as the investigation progressed.
