Nigerian highlife singer Chinedu Okoli, popularly known as Flavour, has opened up about one of the most difficult moments of his early music career, revealing how he was once asked to leave the stage after the arrival of the now-defunct music duo, P-Square.
Speaking during a recent podcast interview, the “Ada Ada” crooner recalled that he was performing at a club when the venue’s manager abruptly instructed him to stop his performance to make way for P-Square.
According to Flavour, the incident happened while he was still struggling to establish himself in the Nigerian music industry.
“I was performing one time when P-Square came in, and the manager of the place told me to leave the stage immediately,” he said.
The singer explained that he quietly switched off his microphone and left the stage before watching the duo receive an overwhelming reception from the audience.
“I switched off my mic and went and sat down somewhere. Ladies were screaming and cheering wildly the moment Paul of P-Square took the mic and began singing ‘Temptation.’”
Flavour admitted that the moment left him wondering why the audience reacted differently despite everyone performing the same type of music.
“I was wondering whether it is not the same music we are all doing because I have been performing there and the crowd had never cheered me that way.”
Rather than allowing the experience to discourage him, Flavour said it became a source of motivation that pushed him to improve his craft and remain consistent.
“I didn’t let the experience discourage me. Instead, I took it as a motivation to work harder and now we are here,” he stated.
