A wave of vandalism has hit Egan Primary School in the Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State, where suspected thieves reportedly broke into the school premises and carted away electrical wires and other installations, disrupting the learning environment and raising fresh concerns over the security of public schools.
The incident prompted the Executive Chairman of Igando-Ikotun LCDA, Ayinde Akinsanya, to lead a high-powered delegation of council officials on an inspection visit to the affected school to assess the extent of the damage and reassure the school community of the council’s support.
During the inspection yesterday, Akinsanya toured the vandalised classrooms and other affected sections of the school, where electrical wiring had reportedly been removed by the intruders. He described the incident as unfortunate and assured the school authorities that immediate steps would be taken to restore the damaged facilities.
The council chairman pledged that the stolen electrical installations would be replaced without delay and disclosed that measures were being put in place to strengthen security around the school to prevent future incidents.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to providing a safe, secure and conducive learning environment for pupils and teachers across the LCDA, stressing that attacks on educational infrastructure would not be allowed to undermine the government’s investment in public education.
“This administration remains committed to ensuring that our schools are safe and functional for effective teaching and learning. We will take the necessary steps to replace the stolen installations and improve security around the school,” Akinsanya assured during the visit.
Teachers and pupils of Egan Primary School expressed appreciation to the chairman and his team for their prompt response, describing the visit as a demonstration of the council’s concern for the welfare of the school community.
The inspection team included the Vice Chairman, Hon. Prince Adewunmi Dada; Secretary to the Local Government, Mojisola Badmus; Council Manager, Kemisola Adedeji; Head of Human Resources, Bashua Sanusi; the Council Treasurer; members of the Legislative Council; Supervisors; Special Advisers; and other senior management staff.
The incident has renewed calls for improved security around public schools to safeguard government infrastructure and ensure that criminal activities do not disrupt the education of pupils.
