Diasporans demand probe of Nigerian man’s death in S-Africa

A group of persons in South Africa identified as Nigeria Union South Africa, NUSA, has called for investigation into the situations surrounding the death of their compatriot, Christian Nnaemeka, who was allegedly attacked by some yet-to-be identified individuals.

NUSA sought for answers over the demise of 34-year-old Nnaemeka, and clamoured for the arrest of the perpetrators of the attack which was said to have happened during late night hours of the day of the incident.

In a statement signed by its Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, George Sylvester, the union held that the deceased, a father of three and native of Igbo-Nze North Local Government in Enugu State, was attacked at about 8pm on Monday around Willow and Filbert Street, Primrose, Johannesburg.

”We therefore demand an immediate, independent and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Christian Hilary Nnaemeka’s death,” a statement by the body made available on Tuesday reads in extracts.

”This is not the first concern raised over the safety of Nigerians, but NUSA insists it should be the last. If anyone is found to have acted unlawfully, that person must face the wrath of the full weight of the law, regardless of position, influence or affiliation.

”We also demand answers: What happened to Christian? Why was he attacked? Was the incident part of an authorised operation? And what steps are the authorities taken to ensure justice?”

It stated that it would engage with relevant South African authorities and also work with the Nigerian Consul-General and the country’s High Commission in Pretoria to pursue the matter to its logical conclusion.

NUSA urged the West Africa country’s diplomatic mission to intensify its engagement with South Africa and uses available diplomatic channels to ensure safety and protection of its citizens in the country.
