Argentina defenders Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martinez have reacted to criticism from former England international Gary Neville following their team’s 2-1 victory over England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final.
The reigning world champions booked their place in the final after overcoming England in a closely contested encounter on Wednesday.
Neville’s remarks sparked response
Neville had previously described Romero and Martinez as “the best worst centre-halves in the world” following Argentina’s 3-2 Round of 16 victory over Egypt.
His comments drew attention ahead of the semi-final, but the Argentine defenders chose to respond after helping their side secure another important win.
Martinez: Our football speaks for us
Speaking in a joint interview with DSports Argentina after the match, Martinez said he and Romero have become accustomed to public criticism.
According to the Manchester United defender, the pair prefer to let their performances on the pitch answer their critics rather than engage in verbal exchanges.
He added that they always approach the game with respect.
Romero fires back at Neville
Romero also addressed Neville’s comments, saying he hopes he never adopts the same approach after retiring from football.
The Tottenham Hotspur defender remarked that he would rather avoid spending his post-playing career criticising fellow professionals.
Argentina will now turn their attention to the World Cup final as they aim to retain the title they won in 2022.
