The Osun Amotekun Corps has launched a manhunt for the assailants responsible for the death of one of its operatives, Odebunmi Samuel, following a robbery attack in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
The Corps said it is collaborating with other security agencies to identify, apprehend and prosecute those behind the attack, assuring residents that the incident would not weaken its resolve to rid the state of criminal elements and safeguard lives and property.
Samuel was reportedly attacked in the early hours of Sunday, July 12, 2026, after suspected robbers accosted him and stole his motorcycle. During the attack, the assailants allegedly struck him on the head with a heavy object before fleeing the scene, leaving him critically injured.
He was rushed to the UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, where he received treatment but succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, July 14.
In a condolence message made available to journalists in Osogbo on Thursday, the Corps Commander, Adekunle Omoyele, described Samuel’s death as shocking, painful and a monumental loss to the Corps and Osun State.
Omoyele described the late officer as a courageous, disciplined and dedicated operative whose commitment to protecting lives and property earned him the respect of his colleagues throughout his years of service.
“The untimely death of Officer Odebunmi Samuel is a heartbreaking tragedy. At a time when his service, experience and commitment were still greatly needed in our collective efforts to ensure peace and security across Osun State, we have lost one of our finest officers.
“His unwavering dedication, professionalism and readiness to serve with courage will remain a lasting legacy within the Osun Amotekun Corps.”
The Commander said the incident had thrown the Corps into mourning, describing the deceased as an exemplary officer who faithfully served the people and remained committed to protecting communities across the state.
He extended condolences to Samuel’s aged mother, wife, children, members of the Odebunmi family, friends and colleagues, praying for the strength to bear what he described as an irreparable loss.
Omoyele lamented that the officer’s promising life was cut short by criminal elements driven by greed and lawlessness despite his unwavering commitment to protecting society from crime and insecurity.
He assured the bereaved family and residents of Osun State that the Corps, in collaboration with other security agencies, would ensure everyone involved in the attack is identified, apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Corps stressed that Samuel’s death would not diminish its determination to combat crime but would instead strengthen its commitment to securing lives and property across Osun State.
The management and personnel of the Osun Amotekun Corps also prayed for the peaceful repose of the late officer’s soul and for God to grant his family, colleagues and loved ones the fortitude to bear the loss.
