The Northwest University in Kano state has expelled no fewer than 34 of it’s students over offences of contravening the school’s laws prohibiting examination malpractice.
The institution’s Senate approved the disciplinary measures against students in a decision which follows a review of reported cases of examination misconduct, with the affected students found to have breached the institution’s examination regulations as outlined in the Students’ Handbook.
In addition to the expulsions, the Senate also approved the rustication of 18 students for various examination-related offences, while 22 others received warning letters for lesser violations of examination rules.
The institution also disclosed that one student, Rukayya Zukuri, was exonerated after a review of her case determined that she was not involved in any wrongdoing, all decisions taken during the Senate’s meeting held on June 17 and 18 in Kano State, and contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the university’s Public Relations Unit and signed by its Head, Abubakar Ibrahim, on behalf of the Registrar, Isyaku Adamu.
According to the statement, the sanctions were approved during the Senate’s 66th statutory meeting after members considered the report of the Senate Committee on Examination Misconduct arising from the second semester of the 2024/2025 academic session.
The university stated the Senate carefully examined the committee’s findings before endorsing the recommendations against students found culpable of violating examination regulations.
“The university remains committed to upholding academic integrity and ensuring that its examination processes are conducted in line with established standards,” the statement said.
Furthermore, the management stressed that disciplinary measures would continue to be applied whenever examination rules are breached, regardless of the individuals involved.
The university noted that maintaining credibility in its academic programmes requires strict adherence to examination guidelines and ethical conduct by students.
Meanwhile, the management urged students to familiarise themselves with the institution’s examination regulations and avoid actions capable of undermining academic standards.
“It is important for students to comply fully with examination guidelines, as violations will continue to attract appropriate sanctions in line with university regulations,” the statement added.
