Kaduna government building airport-style bus terminals to transform public transport – Official
The Kaduna state government has said its ultra-modern Eastern Transport Terminal, designed to international airport standards, will revolutionise public transportation and generate thousands of jobs upon completion.
The acting General Manager of Kaduna Line and Acting Director-General of the Kaduna State Transport Regulatory Authority (KADSTRA), Engr. Inuwa Ibrahim, disclosed this during an inspection tour of the project in Kaduna.
He said the terminal, located in Millennium City and being constructed by CGC Nigeria Ltd. on a 20-hectare site, is the largest ultra-modern transport terminal in terms of size and infrastructure in sub-Saharan West Africa.
According to him, the facility will feature ticketing halls, spacious passenger waiting lounges, multiple boarding terminals, a hotel, restaurants, CNG filling stations and other modern transport facilities.
“The terminal is being built to airport standards to provide passengers with comfort, safety and operational efficiency,” Ibrahim said.
He commended CGC Nigeria Ltd. for maintaining quality standards despite the challenges posed by the rainy season, noting that work had progressed steadily since construction began about four months ago.
“We expect the project to be completed within the next three months for inauguration by Governor Uba Sani,” he added.
The Project Manager of CGC Nigeria Ltd., Mr. Ji Zhongyin, said major structural works had been completed, while block work, drainage, roads and other external infrastructure were currently ongoing.
He said the remaining phase would involve finishing works, interior decoration and the installation of lifts, escalators and safety equipment.
“Our official completion timeline is the end of November, but we are confident of delivering earlier without compromising quality,” Zhongyin said.
Speaking during a media tour of ongoing transport infrastructure projects, Ibrahim said the Uba Sani administration had embarked on comprehensive reforms aimed at modernising Kaduna’s transport system through strategic infrastructure development.
He said the reforms were designed to improve security, enhance urban planning, boost passenger convenience and stimulate economic growth.
According to him, the government first tackled the challenge of illegal motor parks after identifying 51 unauthorised parks along the 24-kilometre Kawo-Command Junction corridor.
He said the illegal parks constituted serious security risks and undermined effective transport regulation.
Ibrahim explained that the government subsequently reopened the Mando Motor Park before commencing the construction of new centralised transport terminals across the state.
He disclosed that the Kakuri Southern Terminal, inaugurated in December 2025, had attained about 90 per cent completion and would accommodate all transport unions and operators in one centralised facility.
The terminal, he said, would include passenger terminals, shops, hotels, a fire safety centre, a filling station and a vehicle maintenance centre.
He further revealed that the Soba Motor Park project had reached about 85 per cent completion and would serve as the new location for the existing Kawo Motor Park to reduce congestion and improve security within Kaduna metropolis.
According to him, security reports had linked criminal activities around the old Kawo Motor Park to several incidents, including the killing of a military officer, adding that transport unions and other stakeholders supported the relocation.
On the Eastern Terminal, Ibrahim said the project complements the Federal Government’s Eastern Bypass initiative by diverting heavy-duty traffic away from the Kaduna city centre.
He disclosed that the terminal would handle about 5,000 vehicles daily when completed and generate about 15,000 direct and indirect jobs.
According to him, the three major transport terminal projects being executed by the state government are expected to create more than 20,000 employment opportunities.
He added that the government was also developing the Kaduna Bus Rapid Transit (KBRT) system and the Kaduna Light Rail project, while plans were underway to introduce water transportation on River Kaduna as part of a comprehensive multimodal transport network.
Ibrahim said the overall goal was to position Kaduna as a modern transport hub operating in line with global best practices.
