The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reinforced its expanding role in national security and global road safety leadership following the recovery of a double barrel gun from a road traffic crash scene in Anambra state and Nigeria’s active participation at the United Nations High Level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety in New York.
The firearm was recovered on Friday about 2:30 p.m. by the FRSC Rescue Patrol Team from the Anambra State Sector Command while conducting a routine inventory of victims’ belongings after rescue operations along the Awka-Enugu Expressway. Officers discovered the weapon concealed among luggage inside one of the crashed vehicles.
In accordance with established operational procedures, the rescue team immediately secured the firearm to prevent unauthorised access and handed it over to the Nigeria Police Force after no claimant or valid documentation for the weapon was found at the scene as stated in a statement signed in Abuja Sunday by the corps spokesperson, Osondu Ohaeri.
Commending the professionalism and vigilance of the rescue team, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, said the incident underscores the FRSC’s growing contribution to national security beyond its statutory responsibility of road traffic management.
He noted that while the corps remains committed to preventing crashes, rescuing victims and ensuring safer highways, its officers frequently serve as critical first responders whose alertness has led to the recovery of stolen vehicles, dangerous weapons and other security sensitive items.
The Corps Marshal assured Nigerians that FRSC would continue to strengthen collaboration with security and law enforcement agencies to protect lives and property while supporting national security objectives.
