The Southern Kaduna Peoples United Association (SOKAPU) has backed calls for an autopsy to determine the cause of the death of Mary Habila, a medical professional who died while on official duty at the residence of the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Monday, SOKAPU President Samuel Tabara said there is no cultural practice in Southern Kaduna that prevents an autopsy from being conducted.
Responding to questions about the family’s opposition to a post-mortem examination, Tabara said the relatives had cited cultural reasons. However, he maintained that Nigerian law takes precedence over cultural traditions in matters involving official investigations.
According to him, ensuring that the true cause of death is established is important, particularly in cases that have attracted public attention.
Tabara disclosed that he had engaged with the deceased’s family over the issue and reiterated that the association supports due process.
He also revealed that a lawyer had been assigned to serve legal documents on the Minister of Works but said the association was still awaiting feedback on the process.
Addressing the group’s demand for ₦20 billion in compensation, Tabara explained that the claim is tied to potential damages that could arise if ongoing investigations uncover evidence of criminal wrongdoing in connection with Habila’s death.
DailyInsightNG recall that Mary Habila reportedly died on June 27 at a private residence belonging to the minister in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, where she had travelled as part of an official medical team.
The case has remained under police investigation, with the deceased’s remains still in official custody.
Earlier reports showed that Habila’s family had appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to order the release of her body for burial, arguing that they do not support an autopsy because they wish to lay her to rest without further delay.
The differing positions taken by the family and SOKAPU have added another dimension to the ongoing public discussion surrounding the circumstances of Habila’s death, as investigations continue.
