The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd) will deliver the keynote lecture on the theme, “Security Challenges and Integrity of Nigeria’s 2027 Elections,” at the 2025 edition of the Blueprint Newspaper’s annual Public Lecture, Impact Series and Awards ceremony.
The annual event, scheduled for Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja, is designed to stimulate national conversations on issues of public importance while recognising outstanding individuals and institutions whose contributions continue to shape Nigeria’s development.
This year’s edition will focus on the country’s security challenges and the implications of its electoral process as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 general elections.
The lecture is expected to bring together policymakers, security chiefs, political leaders, diplomats, civil society organisations, members of the academic community and other stakeholders to deliberate on practical measures for guaranteeing peaceful, credible and transparent elections.
Managing Director of Blueprint Newspapers Limited, Salisu Umar, said the choice of the defence minister as guest speaker, followed careful consideration of his extensive experience in national security, strategic leadership and defence administration as well as his central role in coordinating policies aimed at addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
He said the minister’s wealth of experience in overseeing military operations, inter-agency collaboration and defence policy places him in a unique position to provide informed perspectives on the relationship between national security and the conduct of free, fair and credible elections.
He said the lecture is expected to examine emerging security threats capable of undermining electoral processes, including insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, violent extremism, cyber threats, misinformation, political violence and attacks on electoral infrastructure.
According to him, the lecture will also explore the responsibilities of security agencies in protecting voters, electoral officials and election materials while ensuring professionalism, neutrality and respect for the rule of law throughout the electoral cycle.
He said beyond identifying challenges, the lecture will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss practical recommendations for strengthening cooperation among security agencies, electoral institutions, political actors and citizens in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.
He expressed confidence that the defence minister’s insights would contribute meaningfully to public understanding of the measures required to guarantee peaceful elections and reinforce public confidence in the country’s democratic processes.
About the Minister of Defence
General Musa is one of Nigeria’s most accomplished military leaders, whose career spans over three decades of distinguished service in national defence, counter-insurgency operations and strategic military leadership.
Appointed Minister of Defence on December 4, 2025, he previously served as the 18th Chief of Defence Staff from June 2023 until his retirement in October 2025.
Born on December 25, 1967 in Sokoto state, General Musa hails from Zangon Kataf local government area of Kaduna state. He was commissioned into the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps in 1991 after graduating from the Nigerian Defence Academy with a degree in Chemistry.
He later earned an Advanced Diploma in Security Management from the University of Lagos, a Master’s degree in Military Science from the National Defence University, Beijing, China, and completed studies at the United States Army War College.
During his military career, he commanded key formations, including Sector 3 of Operation Lafiya Dole, the Multinational Joint Task Force, and Operation Hadin Kai, where his leadership contributed significantly to counter-insurgency operations in the North-East. He also served as Commander of the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps before he was appointed Chief of Defence Staff.
A recipient of the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR), General Musa has also received the Colin Powell Award for Soldiering, the Nelson Mandela Exemplary Leadership Award and several military decorations. Widely respected for his professionalism, discipline and commitment to national service, he continues to provide leadership in advancing Nigeria’s security architecture and strengthening the nation’s defence capabilities.
