Bandits kill soldier during attack on Plateau community

A Nigerian soldier has been killed while defending civilians after bandits launched an attack on a community in Plateau State.

The soldier, identified as Lance Corporal Yusuf Zakari, was killed during a fierce gun battle as troops successfully prevented the attackers from advancing into the community.

Although the bandits were forced to retreat, they reportedly fled with the soldier’s service rifle, prompting an intensified military manhunt.

It was gathered on Monday that the incident occurred at about 1:25 p.m. yesterday when troops deployed as a blocking force intercepted the armed group near Manja community in Plateau State.

The gunmen reportedly emerged from the Manja Forest and attempted to advance into the settlement before they were confronted by the troops.

According to a military source, a fierce exchange of gunfire ensued as the soldiers repelled the advancing attackers.

During the confrontation, Zakari was caught in an ambush and sustained fatal injuries while helping to repel the assault.

The source said additional troops had been deployed to reinforce security in the area, while intelligence and search operations had been expanded to track down the fleeing gunmen and recover the stolen rifle.

Military investigators are also working to establish the identities and affiliations of those responsible for the attack.

“The troops prevented what could have become a devastating assault on innocent residents,” the military source said.

“Even though we lost one of our personnel, the operation succeeded in stopping the attackers from reaching the community.”

Preliminary intelligence, according to the source, suggests the attackers may comprise a combination of armed Fulani bandits operating within Plateau State and criminal elements believed to have crossed from neighbouring Nasarawa State.

However, the source stressed that investigations were ongoing to establish the exact identities and affiliations of those involved.

He added that intelligence assets had been activated across surrounding forest areas to monitor likely escape routes and support the ongoing pursuit of the fleeing gunmen.

“The sacrifice made by our personnel reflects the commitment of the armed forces to protecting lives and preserving peace,” the source added.

“Operations will continue until those behind this attack are located and brought to justice.”
