Enugu man confesses to killing girlfriend after HIV dispute

A 30-year-old man, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, has allegedly confessed to killing his 27-year-old girlfriend, Chinyere Rosemary Ugwu, following an argument over allegations of HIV infection in Enugu State.

Emmanuel reportedly told the police that the disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation on September 19, 2026.

According to his account, he struck Chinyere during the altercation, causing her to collapse, before allegedly using a machete to inflict injuries on her wrist, head and neck.

When questioned about the severed wrist, the suspect reportedly admitted: “Yeah, I chopped off the wrist.”

He allegedly wrapped Chinyere’s body in a black nylon bag and kept it inside his apartment.

Three days later, neighbours reportedly forced their way into the apartment after being alerted by a strong odour and discovered the decomposing remains of the woman.

The suspect reportedly told investigators that he met Chinyere through Facebook in 2023 and had intended to marry her.

He also claimed that he was under the influence of a substance during the incident and was not fully conscious of his actions.

Chinyere was a Medical Laboratory Science graduate of the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, and had recently completed her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

The police have reportedly ordered the conclusion of the investigation, after which the suspect is expected to be charged to court
