President Bola Tinubu has approved national honours for several Nigerians who played roles in the country’s pro-democracy movement, especially during the political crisis surrounding June 12.
The award recipients include activists, lawyers, journalists, intellectuals, and military officers who were recognised for their contributions and sacrifices during Nigeria’s struggle for democratic restoration.
The Presidency said many of those honoured faced challenges including persecution, detention, exile, and other difficulties during the period.
June 12 struggle remains key moment in Nigeria’s democracy
The June 12 movement is regarded as one of Nigeria’s most significant political events, linked to the annulled 1993 presidential election and the country’s eventual return to democratic governance in 1999.
The recognition highlights individuals who contributed to the push for democratic values and civilian rule.
Among those honoured are the late human rights activist and politician Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, Barrister Ayoka Lawani, Tunde Fagbenle, Oladele Alake, Olatunji Bello, Louis Odion, Segun Babatope, and several other notable figures.
Journalists, activists and professionals recognised
The list also includes media professionals, civil society figures, and democracy advocates such as Sam Omatseye, Bola Bolawole, Femi Kusa, Debo Adeniran, Chief Ayo Opadokun, Richard Akinnola, Joe Igbokwe, and Babajide Kolade-Otitoju.
The Presidency also announced posthumous recognition for Dr Arthur Nwankwo and Ben Charles-Obi.
Military officers receive recognition
Several military officers connected to the June 12 democratic struggle were also included among the award recipients.
Those recognised include former National Security Adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki, Major General Chris Eze, Major General Harris Dzarma, Major General Ishola Williams (rtd), and other senior military figures.
The list also includes officers such as Brigadier General Lawal Jaafaru Isa, Col Umar Farouk Ahmed, Col Lawan Gwadabe, and Brigadier Yahaya Abubakar, who is the current Etsu Nupe.

President Tinubu said the complete list of national honours recipients will be released in the coming days.
The announcement forms part of activities marking the significance of June 12 and recognising individuals associated with Nigeria’s democratic journey.
