FIFA has confirmed that Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey will not feature in the Black Stars’ opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after he was unable to travel to Canada
.The football governing body said Partey’s visa application was refused by Canadian authorities, preventing him from joining Ghana’s squad for their first group-stage fixture against Panama.
The match is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, June 17.

According to FIFA, Partey will remain with Ghana’s team base camp in Boston, United States, as he cannot enter Canada for the fixture.
The decision comes amid reports surrounding allegations against the player, although FIFA clarified that immigration decisions are handled entirely by the host country.

The organisation explained that, as with previous international tournaments, the host government has the final authority over who is granted a visa and allowed to enter the country.
