The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), popularly known as the Shiite movement, has announced plans to hold Ashura processions across the country on Friday, June 26, 2026.
The annual religious event is organised to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Husain, grandson of Prophet Muhammad, during the Battle of Karbala.
The movement, led by Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, said the processions would take place in hundreds of communities across Nigeria.
Processions planned across states
According to a statement released by the group’s Media Forum and signed by Ammar Muhammad-Rajab, the activities will be held in more than 600 towns and villages across over 23 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The group said followers have been observing Muharram activities since the beginning of the Islamic New Year.
The movement explained that the date of the main procession was moved to Friday to align with commemorations taking place in Karbala, Iraq.
Ashura described as symbol of justice
IMN said Ashura represents values such as justice, sacrifice and standing against oppression.
The group stated that the remembrance of Imam Husain’s death continues to inspire followers around the world.
According to the movement, the annual gathering is not only a mourning event but also a reminder of the importance of defending truth and moral principles.
Religious observance continues nationwide
The Islamic Movement said religious activities linked to Ashura can also be observed on Thursday, which corresponds with the 10th day of Muharram.
Ashura is marked annually by millions of Muslims worldwide, particularly within the Shia tradition.
In Nigeria, the movement has organised Ashura commemorations for decades, with gatherings often involving public marches, prayers and remembrance activities.
The group said it remains committed to preserving the legacy associated with Imam Husain and promoting the values connected to the event.
