The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of six officers identified in a viral video allegedly assaulting a young man in Ikeduru Local Government Area of the state.
The officers were taken into custody after footage of the incident surfaced online, prompting the Commissioner of Police, Audu Bosso, to order a comprehensive investigation.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, said the officers—Inspector Ugochukwu Ibe, Inspector Nwachi Chimezie, Sergeant Ugoezuhu Austin, Corporal Michael Obi, Corporal Ebuka Onwuegbu, and Corporal Amos Sunny—were detained following a review of the video evidence.
“The officers have been taken into custody, and disciplinary procedures have been initiated in line with the extant regulations of the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement read.
Okoye said the police commissioner had directed that disciplinary proceedings be conducted in accordance with the Force’s regulations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, the commissioner has assured members of the public that the matter would be handled professionally, transparently, and without bias, reiterating the command’s zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct and violations of citizens’ rights.
He emphasized that the officers’ actions, as seen in the video, were inconsistent with the core values and ethical standards of the Nigeria Police Force, adding that the outcome of the investigation would be made public upon its conclusion.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and urged residents to remain vigilant and report cases of police misconduct or other suspicious activities through appropriate channels.
