Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in their belief in democracy, describing it as the most effective platform for citizen participation, accountability and national development.
The governor made the appeal in a Democracy Day message commemorating June 12, a date widely regarded as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history.
According to him, the annual observance provides an opportunity for reflection on the nation’s democratic journey and a chance to renew commitment to democratic values.

Among those recognized were the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola and his wife, the late Kudirat Abiola, whose sacrifices remain central to the June 12 narrative.
He also acknowledged numerous pro-democracy activists and patriots who fought against military rule and contributed to the restoration of democratic governance.

Oyebanji further commended former President Muhammadu Buhari for officially recognizing June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
