Despite falling narrowly to Portugal, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have held onto their 26th position in the FIFA World Rankings released on Thursday, underlining the consistency built since Eric Chelle took over as head coach.
The three-time African champions made a strong impression during the Unity Cup in London, securing a 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe before overpowering Jamaica 3-0 to claim the invitational crown.
Their June preparations also featured a hard-fought 2-2 draw away to Poland, followed by the 2-1 defeat to the UEFA Nations League holders in Leiria on Wednesday evening.
Although the results were mixed, the side preserved its place in the global order, reflecting steady progress under Chelle’s stewardship.
The achievement offers encouragement ahead of Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaigns and other international duties.
Across Africa, Morocco stands as the highest-ranked nation at seventh globally, Senegal occupies second place on the continent ahead of Nigeria, while Algeria and Egypt complete the top five.
On the world stage, Argentina has reclaimed the number one ranking as reigning world champions, with Lionel Messi’s side returning to the summit after victories over Honduras and Iceland ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Spain sits in second, France in third, England fourth and Portugal fifth.
Rounding out the top 10 are Brazil in sixth, Morocco seventh, the Netherlands eighth, Belgium ninth and Germany tenth.
The next FIFA men’s world rankings are scheduled for release on July 20, shortly after the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup.
