Fact-Check: Was Gen. Rabe’s Body Handed Over to Katsina Authorities by Bandits?
Claim: A viral image circulating on social media claims that heavily armed bandits delivered the body of late retired Major General Abubakar Rabe to authorities in Katsina State after he died in captivity.
Background: The image, widely shared across X (formerly Twitter) and other social media platforms, purportedly shows armed terrorists handing over the corpse of the deceased former Director of Defence Information.
The late Major General Abubakar Rabe was abducted alongside his wife, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, and their driver, Abdullahi Sa’idu, on May 30, 2026, along the Marabar Musawa-Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.
While the driver reportedly escaped with gunshot injuries, the retired general and his wife were taken into the forest by the abductors.
On June 13, 2026, the Katsina State Government announced the death of the retired military officer while in captivity.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasiru Mu’azu, the government disclosed that the late general died due to complications arising from diabetes and hypertension despite efforts to secure his release.
Shortly after the announcement, the viral image began circulating online with claims that the bandits personally delivered the deceased general’s body to authorities before returning unchallenged to the forest.
One of the widely circulated posts read:

An X user, @Chima_Obi1234, shared the image with the caption:
«“What kind of country is this? A Nigerian army general exchanged birthday souvenir. Heavily armed bandits handed over the body of General Rabe yesterday morning in Katsina and left for the neighboring forest of Matazu, unchallenged.”»
As of the time of this fact-check, the post had garnered over 15,000 views, 127 reposts, and 151 likes.
Another X user, Adetutu Balogun MBA, also posted the image with the caption:
«“In a sovereign country, terrorists kidnapped, killed, and handed over the body of an Army Major General, and walked away unchallenged.”»
The post had recorded over 22,000 views, 390 likes, and 360 reposts at the time this report was filed.
Similarly, an online platform, Ripples Nigeria, published a report using the same image with the headline: “Heavily armed bandits hand over body of late kidnapped general for burial.”
The Nigerian Guardian also did a story and accompanied it with the picture.
Verification: To verify the authenticity of the viral image and accompanying claims, TimesNG conducted Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) checks using AI-detection verification tool, AI or Not.
Findings from the analysis showed no evidence that the image was an authentic photograph from the alleged incident.
An AI-detection assessment indicated that the image was 97 percent likely to have been AI-generated, with a 57 percent probability of being a deepfake or digitally manipulated composition.
Further visual and forensic examination also revealed several inconsistencies commonly associated with AI-generated images, including:
- Unnaturally smooth and synthetic facial features and clothing textures.
- Distorted or anatomically inconsistent hands, fingers, and weapon grips.
- Mismatched lighting and shadow patterns across different sections of the image.
- Slightly artificial facial expressions and body proportions.
- A digitally assembled memorial-style banner rather than characteristics of a raw documentary photograph.
TimesNG also sought official clarification from the Katsina State Government.
Efforts to contact the Katsina State Commissioner for Information, Dr Bala Zango, through calls and WhatsApp messages were unsuccessful.
However, TimesNG obtained and transcribed a voice interview the commissioner granted to another journalist in Katsina State.
In the interview, the commissioner explained that communication with the bandits was carried out through an intermediary contact person who relayed messages between both parties.
According to him, the same intermediary informed the government about the late general’s death.
The commissioner further stated that the Katsina State Government had attempted to send medication to the retired general after receiving reports about his deteriorating health condition days before his death.
He claimed the medication was delayed because the kidnappers failed to accept it promptly until shortly before the general died.
The commissioner also addressed reports concerning the arrest of some individuals allegedly linked to the abductors, stating that security authorities handling those arrests were in a better position to comment on related demands allegedly made by the criminals.
Notably, the commissioner did not confirm the viral claim that the deceased general’s body was physically handed over by bandits to government authorities.
TimesNG also found that no credible government agency, security authority, or reputable media organisation had officially authenticated the viral image as a genuine photograph from the scene.
Conclusion: Findings from TimesNG’s verification processes, particularly forensic and AI-detection analysis, indicate that the viral image claiming to show bandits handing over the body of late Major General Abubakar Rabe was digitally generated and not an authentic photograph from the incident.
Verdict: Misleading.
