The organisers of The Headies Awards have revealed why the 18th edition of the Nigerian music awards will take place outside the country.
The ceremony will be hosted in Toronto, Canada, marking another international move for the prestigious entertainment event.
Organisers Reveal Reason Behind Canada Choice
Headies founder Ayo Animashaun explained that the decision was based largely on economic considerations.
Speaking during “The Big Announcement” event in Lagos, Animashaun said the organisers had to consider how best to sustain the awards while maintaining its global appeal.
He noted that moving the event abroad was a strategic decision rather than a move away from Nigeria.
Lagos Fans to Join Through Watch Party
Although the main ceremony will hold in Toronto, Nigerian fans will still be part of the celebration through a live watch party in Lagos.
The organisers said the arrangement will allow viewers in Nigeria to follow the awards and participate as the event happens internationally.
Headies Previous International Move
This will not be the first time The Headies has taken place outside Nigeria.
The awards previously moved to Atlanta, United States, for the 15th edition in 2022 before returning to Lagos for the 17th edition.
The latest move reflects the organisers’ continued effort to expand the reach of Nigerian music globally.
Global Future for Nigerian Music Awards
The organisers believe hosting the event internationally will help create more opportunities for Nigerian artistes and connect Afrobeats with a wider global audience.
The 18th Headies Awards will therefore combine a foreign-based main ceremony with Nigerian fan participation.
