Police probes Kano politician over firearm display

The Kano State Police Command has invited Aminu Warkal over the alleged unlawful display of a firearm during what appeared to be a political gathering.

The command said Warkal was seen in a video circulating on social media openly displaying a firearm suspected to be a pump-action rifle.

According to the command, the video was discovered during routine cyber patrol, while the alleged act could violate provisions of the Firearms Act and potentially cause fear, intimidation and a breach of public peace.

In a statement issued by its Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, on Monday, the command said Warkal was invited to its headquarters in Bompai, Kano, on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori.

It added that the politician was currently at the State Intelligence Department, where an investigation into the incident was ongoing.

The Commissioner of Police warned that the command would not tolerate lawlessness, thuggery or the display of weapons capable of threatening public peace, regardless of the status of the person involved.

He urged political gladiators, their supporters and other stakeholders to conduct themselves peacefully and comply with the Electoral Act, Firearms Act and other relevant laws.

The command also reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that Kano State remained peaceful before, during and after the political season.
