From Superstar to Club Owner: Messi Takes Over Spanish Side Eldense

Lionel Messi has completed the acquisition of Spanish second-tier club CD Eldense, becoming the majority owner of the club in his second Spanish football ownership venture this year.

Eldense officially announced the change of ownership on Thursday, October 1, describing Messi’s arrival as the beginning of a new chapter in the club’s more than 100-year history. The transaction, however, remains subject to the required authorisation from Spain’s Higher Sports Council (CSD) under the country’s Sports Law.

Messi acquired the shares previously held by Colombian investment group TH Soluciones, which had been the club’s majority shareholder. Financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed.

The move expands Messi’s involvement in Spanish football after he acquired fifth-tier side UE Cornellà in April 2026. Eldense now becomes his second Spanish club investment of the year.

Founded in 1921 and based in Elda, Alicante, CD Eldense currently compete in Spain’s second division, LaLiga Hypermotion.

In its announcement, Eldense said the new ownership would begin a long-term project focused on the club’s sporting, institutional and social development. The club also said it intends to strengthen its position in professional football while maintaining its history and blue-and-red identity.

Messi’s arrival gives Eldense a globally recognised figure as its new majority owner while the club continues its campaign in Spain’s second tier.

The acquisition also adds another dimension to Messi’s growing involvement in football beyond his playing career. The 39-year-old remains an Inter Miami player while expanding his investments in football clubs.

The club’s ownership change now awaits the required CSD approval before the transaction can be fully cleared under Spanish sports regulations.
