Two teenagers have drowned after floodwaters swept through Askplaye community in Kaduna State following days of heavy rainfall and a windstorm.
The victims were identified as 19-year-old Suleiman Yakubu and 17-year-old Abubakar Mohammed. Their bodies have yet to be recovered.
The flooding occurred after heavy rainfall persisted for about five consecutive days, from last Thursday to Tuesday, causing water levels to rise and flooding several areas of the community.
The flooding also submerged some roads and temporarily trapped residents in their homes in certain locations.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), North-West Operations Office, Kaduna, confirmed the incident on Wednesday and said emergency officials had commenced an assessment of the affected communities.
NEMA said its Head of Operations, Halima Suleiman, led a team comprising officials of the agency, the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) and other stakeholders to inspect areas affected by the flooding.
According to the agency, the assessment was aimed at determining the extent of the damage and identifying the immediate needs of affected communities.
NEMA also visited the bereaved families of the teenagers to offer condolences and pledged to provide relief support.
The agency said emergency responders would continue to monitor the flood situation across affected communities and coordinate further interventions based on the needs identified during the assessment.
