Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi have met in Abuja.
Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, disclosed the meeting in a post on X on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
The two opposition politicians met at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
According to Hassan, Kwankwaso, who is the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), met Amaechi, the vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), during the encounter.
He described Amaechi as Kwankwaso’s “longtime friend and brother”, highlighting the personal relationship between the two politicians despite their current involvement in different political platforms.
“His Excellency, Sen. @KwankwasoRM, NDC Vice Presidential Candidate, today Wednesday (2nd,Sept 2026) met with his longtime friend and brother, His Excellency Rotimi Amaechi, ADC Vice Presidential Candidate, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja,” Hassan wrote.
A video of the meeting showing the two politicians together at the Abuja airport was also shared.
Meanwhile, Kwankwaso’s political position has come under scrutiny in recent weeks following his movement into the NDC and reports of possible defections involving politicians associated with his political structure in Kano State.
Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad recently claimed that Kwankwaso was losing some of the political influence he previously enjoyed in Kano following his decision to join the NDC.
“Sen. Kwankwaso must be regretting his decision to join the NDC. The move appears to be costing him the political ground he once firmly held in Kano,” Ahmad wrote on X.
His comment followed reports of a possible move by former Kano State Deputy Governor Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna and members of his political structure from the NDC to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Gawuna, who is also the NDC senatorial candidate, is regarded as a prominent figure in Kano politics and has been associated with Kwankwaso’s political camp.
Speculation over his possible defection increased after members of his political structure paid a solidarity visit to Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and his deputy, Murtala Sule Garo.
The delegation was led by Muhammad Badaru Umar, a close associate of Gawuna, and included several politicians linked to the former deputy governor.
During the visit, NDC Vice Chairman in Kano State Ali Datti Yako praised Governor Yusuf’s administration and said the governor was working to transform the state.
“Everyone knows that Governor Yusuf is working tirelessly to transform Kano State,” Yako said.
The visit has since fueled speculation that Gawuna and some members of his political camp could eventually leave the NDC and join the APC.
Another development that has raised questions about Kwankwaso’s political structure in Kano was the resignation of Senator Rufai Sani Hanga from the NDC.
Hanga, who represents Kano Central Senatorial District, announced his resignation in a letter dated August 3, 2026, addressed to the NDC Ward Chairman in Dakata Ward, Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The senator said his decision followed “careful reflection and personal deliberation” and was aimed at allowing him to pursue other personal commitments and career opportunities.
“I am writing to formally notify you of my resignation from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), effective from today, 3rd August 2026,” Hanga stated.
He also thanked the party leadership and members for their support, requested that his name be removed from the party’s membership register and returned his membership card.
Hanga’s resignation came shortly after he met with President Bola Tinubu, prompting further speculation about possible political movements ahead of the 2027 elections.
