Trabzonspor interim head coach Huseyin Cimsir has eased concerns over Paul Onuachu’s condition after the Super Eagles striker was forced off during Sunday’s 5-0 victory over Genclerbirligi.
Onuachu left the pitch in the 44th minute after sustaining a chin injury following a physical challenge. He was replaced by new signing Franculino Dju.
However, Cimsir, who recently took charge following Fatih Terim’s departure, indicated that the injury was not believed to be serious and suggested that Onuachu could return soon.
“I don’t think it’s a very important thing. There is no troubled situation,” Cimsir said in comments relayed by HaberTS.
The injury came on a memorable afternoon for Onuachu, who had ended a five-match scoring drought by finding the net twice before his early departure.
The Nigerian striker needed less than five minutes to put Trabzonspor ahead before Mohamed Salah extended the advantage from the penalty spot.
Onuachu struck again in the 22nd minute to complete his brace, while Ernest Muci and Franculino Dju added further goals as Trabzonspor secured a convincing victory.
The result provided a major boost for the Turkish Cup holders after their slow start to the season and strengthened their push for a stronger position in the title race.
Trabzonspor will now hope Onuachu recovers in time for next weekend’s league encounter with Konyaspor, particularly after the striker rediscovered his scoring touch against Genclerbirligi.
His availability will also be important to Nigeria, with the Super Eagles preparing for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau later this month.
Onuachu will be keen to maintain the momentum from his latest performance after his two goals brought an end to his five-game barren run across all competitions this season.
For now, Cimsir’s comments provide reassurance that the 32-year-old’s withdrawal may not result in a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
