Professor Alfred Bandele Kasunmu, SAN, a renowned Nigerian lawyer, legal scholar and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has died at the age of 92.
Kasunmu, who was widely respected for his contributions to the Nigerian legal profession, education, scholarship and national development, died peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, August 9, 2026.
His death was announced by the Global President of the Baptist Academy Old Students Association, Olumide Ajomale, in a statement issued on behalf of the association’s National Executive Council.
The announcement has sparked tributes from members of the Baptist Academy community and others who knew the late legal scholar, with many describing him as a distinguished alumnus, mentor and influential figure whose impact extended beyond the courtroom.
Kasunmu dies after decades of service
Kasunmu was a member of the Baptist Academy Class of 1953 and subsequently served as a trustee of the Baptist Academy Old Students Association.
Announcing his death, the association expressed gratitude for his life and described his passing as the end of an era for one of its most distinguished old students.
“With gratitude to God for a life well spent in service to God and humanity, we announce the passing of our distinguished alumnus, Professor Alfred Bandele Kasunmu, SAN, who departed peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, 9th August 2026 at the age of 92,” the statement said.
The association said Kasunmu remained an embodiment of the values associated with Baptist Academy throughout his life, particularly through his commitment to integrity, discipline, scholarship and service.
Legal community mourns distinguished scholar
The Baptist Academy Old Students Association described Kasunmu as “a towering figure in law, scholarship, and national development.”
Throughout his career, he was recognised for his contributions to legal practice and scholarship, while also playing an important role in mentoring younger professionals and encouraging academic excellence.
His long career in law earned him a place among prominent figures in Nigeria’s legal community, while his academic and professional contributions helped shape the lives of many who came into contact with him.
Kasunmu embodied Baptist Academy values
The association said Kasunmu exemplified the core values of Baptist Academy, particularly “Integrity, Discipline, and Service.”
He was also described as a cherished patriarch within his family and a respected member of the Baptist Academy old students’ community.
According to the association, his commitment to excellence and service remained an inspiration to generations of former students.
Baptist Academy honoured Kasunmu
Kasunmu’s contributions to the Baptist Academy community were formally recognised in 2025 when the old students’ association honoured him with the BAOSA Order of Excellence Award.
He was among 170 distinguished old students recognised during the association’s 170th Founders Day celebration.
The honour reflected his longstanding connection with the institution, which he attended more than seven decades ago, as well as the impact of his career and service to society.
Association celebrates his enduring legacy
While mourning Kasunmu’s death, BAOSA said his life and achievements would continue to inspire future generations.
“His legacy of wisdom, mentorship, and commitment to excellence will continue to inspire generations of Baptacads and Nigerians at large,” the association said.
The association urged Baptist Academy old students around the world to remember Kasunmu’s family in their prayers as they mourn his passing.
Funeral arrangements to be announced
The association said details of Kasunmu’s funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.
His death marks the end of a long life characterised by service to the legal profession, scholarship, education and mentorship.
He leaves behind his family, colleagues, former students, mentees and numerous admirers who will remember him for his contributions to law, education and society.
