Osun 2026: IGP Disu Deploys DIG Mohammed to Lead Election Security Operations
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has deployed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG Ishyaku Mohammed, to Osun State to coordinate security operations for the state’s governorship election scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026.
The deployment is part of measures by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to ensure a peaceful, secure and credible electoral process across the state.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, in Abuja.
According to the statement, DIG Mohammed will coordinate the police component of the election security arrangement and work with other security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).
He will be supported by Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police deployed across Osun State’s three senatorial districts.
The senior officers are expected to supervise operations, strengthen intelligence-led policing and ensure prompt response to emerging security threats before, during and after the election.
The police said comprehensive security arrangements had been put in place to protect voters, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), election materials, polling units, collation centres, accredited observers and media practitioners.
The IGP warned political actors, their supporters and other individuals planning to disrupt the election that ballot snatching, voter intimidation, political thuggery and other electoral offences would attract immediate arrest and prosecution.
Disu also reiterated the ban on armed escorts, security aides and other unauthorised persons accompanying political figures or VIPs to polling units and collation centres on election day.
The police further warned that state-established security outfits, quasi-security groups and private security organisations are not authorised to participate in election-security operations, in line with established NPF directives.
The Force urged residents, voters and visitors in Osun State to remain peaceful and exercise their civic rights without fear.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, neutrality, respect for human rights and protection of the integrity of the electoral process.
