“I recorded ‘Mma Mma’ under a blanket while squatting” – Frank Edwards recounts how he landed his first million-naira deal

Gospel singer Frank Edwards has shared the inspiring story behind his breakthrough, revealing that he recorded one of his biggest songs while living as a squatter and using a blanket as a makeshift vocal booth.

Speaking during a recent church performance, the singer recalled that in 2011, his mother gave him ₦150,000 to set up a small studio.

According to him, he used the money to build a modest recording space in a corner of the room where he was squatting with someone else.

Frank explained that because the house was close to the roadside and there was no vocal booth, he covered himself and the microphone with a blanket to reduce outside noise while recording his hit song, “Mma Mma.”

“I recorded ‘Mma Mma’ under a blanket because we lived close to the roadside. I had only two pairs of jeans and ate once a day, but God still lifted me,” he said.

The singer said his life changed after music marketer Honesty Music visited the tiny studio and, despite initially being disappointed by its appearance, was amazed by the quality of the songs.

According to Frank, the marketer offered him a ₦4 million recording deal, which he accepted immediately without reading the contract.

“I just flipped the paper, saw where they wrote ₦4 million and signed it. No need to read it. Make I chop first,” he added.

Frank added that the deal helped him move into a better apartment, build a proper studio, and later connect with music producer Don Moen, a relationship he said transformed his career.
