Afrobeats superstar Davido has revealed how iconic Nigerian music duo P-Square inspired his journey into music and helped shape his belief in the global potential of African artistes.
Davido made the revelation during a recent interview with the BBC, recalling how he proudly spoke about Peter and Paul Okoye while he was still in school.
The singer said P-Square’s international collaborations and relationships with global music stars gave him confidence that African musicians could compete successfully on the world stage.
“P-Square inspired me. I used to tell my friends in school about how they were two African artistes who had a song with Snoop Dogg and were friends with Kanye West,” he said.
According to Davido, watching P-Square achieve international recognition encouraged young Nigerian artistes to dream beyond the African music market.
He described their achievements as an important source of inspiration during his formative years as an aspiring musician.
The “Unavailable” hitmaker said P-Square’s ability to collaborate with major international artistes demonstrated that African musicians could establish meaningful relationships within the global music industry.
P-Square, comprising twin brothers Peter and Paul Okoye, became one of Africa’s most successful music duos, producing several hit songs and performing to audiences around the world.
Their success during the early stages of Afrobeats’ global expansion helped inspire a new generation of Nigerian artistes, including Davido and other leading stars.
Davido has since become one of Africa’s most internationally recognised musicians, recording collaborations with several major global artistes and helping to further popularise Afrobeats around the world.
