THE Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has trained 200 sheep and goat farmers in Kano to improve livestock productivity and strengthen food security.
The ministry disclosed this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja.
Dr Chinyere Akunjobi, Permanent Secretary in the ministry, said the training focused on improved production practices to raise livestock productivity and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for small-scale farmers.
Akunjobi, represented by Mr Victor Egbon, Director, Department of Ruminant and Monogastric Development, said livestock development required more than the provision of animals.
She said farmers also needed the knowledge and skills to manage their livestock effectively.
“Interventions of this nature are designed to strengthen farmers’ productive capacity, improve household livelihoods and support the Federal Government’s efforts to increase livestock production and food security.
“This training combined theoretical sessions with practical demonstrations to enable participants understand how proper feeding, breeding, animal health and general husbandry can contribute to healthier animals, improved productivity and boost income.
“The three-day programme featured beneficiaries from Fagge, Tarauni and Gwale Local Government Areas, who were trained in animal management, feeding, breeding, healthcare and other husbandry practices aimed at improving productivity and reducing losses,” she said.
The Permanent Secretary, Kano State Ministry of Livestock Development, Rabi Waya, commended the Federal Government for the intervention.
Waya assured that the state would continue to explore opportunities to help farmers translate the knowledge acquired and productive inputs provided into sustainable economic activities. (NAN)
