The Cross River State Deputy Governor, Peter Odey, has denied reports that he was involved in an accident, clarifying that the incident involved a Government House press bus in his convoy and not his vehicle.
The incident occurred on Sunday, August 9, while Odey was returning from Northern Cross River State after representing Governor Bassey Otu at a stakeholder engagement on the proposed concession of the Obudu Ranch Resort.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by Odey’s Press Secretary, Fred Abua, the press bus was involved in the incident while the convoy was passing through Yakurr Local Government Area.
“While the convoy was passing through Yakurr Local Government Area, the driver of the Government House Press bus lost control and ran into the barricades at an Army checkpoint,” the statement said.
It clarified that no other vehicle was involved in the incident and no life was lost, although some occupants of the press bus sustained minor injuries.
The statement also dismissed reports that the vehicle was an old bus, saying it was a Toyota Hiace purchased brand new in 2024.
“The affected persons were immediately evacuated from the scene and taken for medical attention. All staff involved are in stable condition and have since resumed work,” it added.
The Deputy Governor’s office stressed that Odey was not involved in the incident and continued his journey safely to Calabar.
It urged members of the public to disregard the viral reports and rely on official communications from the Cross River State Government for accurate information.
The statement added that Odey appreciated the concerns expressed by citizens and members of the media, while reaffirming his commitment to transparency and the timely dissemination of factual information.
