CHADIAN authorities on Thursday confirmed that at least eight people have died following cholera outbreak in N’Djamena, the Chad capital.
Officials disclosed this at an emergency meeting chaired by the government delegate of N’Djamena, Amina Kodjiana.
According to official figures presented at the meeting, the city recorded 75 cholera cases as of Tuesday.
The authorities said eight persons had died, eight were receiving treatment in hospital, while 59 had recovered.
They added that the disease had spread to nine neighbourhoods in the capital.
Kodjiana urged community leaders to intensify public awareness and encourage residents to observe preventive measures, including regular hand washing before meals and after using the toilet, drinking safe water and maintaining clean surroundings.
Cholera is a highly infectious disease characterised by acute watery diarrhoea, which can lead to severe dehydration and death if left untreated.(Xinhua/NAN)
